In 2020 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the LGBTQ Pride Parade, Hunter was named as one of the heroes under "leading the nation toward equality, acceptance, and dignity for all people" by Queerty magazine. In 2021, Times listed her among "100 emerging leaders who are shaping the future".
Hunter Schafer was born on 31st December 1998 to parents Mac Schafer and Katy Schafer. She is the eldest child in the family with three younger siblings; two sisters and a brother. They were born and raised in Trenton, New Jersey.
Schafer’s father is a pastor and the family had to move from one church to another because of his job. Hunter was a scholar student during her college days. She graduated in the year 2017 from North Carolina School of the Arts with a major in Visual Arts.
In 2017, Schafer was offered an interview with the then United States Secretary of State and Senator Hillary Clinton as an LGBTQ activist and advocate. She was listed on Vogue’s 21 Under 21 list.
After Schafer’s graduation, she initiated a career in modeling in her late teens. As of now, Hunter has modeled for reputed brands like Dior, Prada, Coach, Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs, Versus Versace, Shiseido, and many more.
