Lynette Rice after interviewing over eighty cast and crew members on the set of Grey’s Anatomy for the book "How to Save a Life: The Inside Story of Grey’s Anatomy" presents a statement by James D. Parriott, former executive producer of the show, where he states “He (Patrick Dempsey) had this hold on the set where he knew he could stop production and scare people.”
Parriott further adds on Patrick’s relationship with the show’s writer Shonda Rhimes as after eleven years of collaboration with the show "I think he was just done with the show. He didn’t like the inconvenience of coming in every day and working. He and Shonda were at each other’s throats."
There came a time when Shonda had to approach the network, ‘If he doesn’t go, I go. Nobody wanted him to leave because he was, the show. He and Ellen.” The crew had a hard time creating a storyline for his departure as he was the lifeline of the show.
Parriott adds on to his statement “There were HR issues” pointing to his time on sets and complaints received from his fellow cast members. Patrick’s relationship with his co-actor and onscreen wife Ellen Pompei created tensions on set states, Jeannine Renshaw, then executive producer of the show.
Patrick states in his interview with Rice that it was the profitable hefty paychecks that were holding him back to the show, the demanding work schedule had got him frustrated along with the fact that he had to remain away from his family.
Patrick Dempsey was born on January 13, 1966, to parents Amanda and William Dempsey. He was born and raised in Lewiston with his two elder sisters and one half-brother. Dempsey’s mother was a secretary at a local school and his father was a salesman for a local insurance company.
At age twelve, Dempsey suffered from dyslexia, he explains his journey with the disease as "It's given me a perspective of - you have to keep working, I have never given up.” He requires to put extra effort into memorizing the scripts as a result of the diagnosis.
Dempsey had first married his manager Rochelle Parker when he was of age twenty-one. Rochelle was of age forty-eight at the time of their marriage. They have shared the screen in the movie In The Mood. The marriage didn’t last and was called off in the year 1994.
